Kindergarten Unit 1--Launching the Writers Workshop Approximate Dates: August 22-October 21.
Unit Overview:
Students will learn rituals and routines; tell, draw, and write stories from their families communities and diverse cultural backgrounds. Use comprehension to understand stories and will understand common elements of a narrative and will build oral language vocabulary.

What makes a good writer?
Why do we write?
Students will Know/Understand that:
We all have stories to tell, writing is paced, writing requires thought and planning, writers use pictures and words, good writers use labels, writers include details and at least 5 colors in ther drawubgsm and writers include characters and a setting in their drawings.

Pre-Assessment:
Writing to a prompt, "Write a story about something you do with your family.: Asses student work based on picture check chart from the P & P Guide.
Informal Assessments:
Continued daily practice using these skills, writing conferences, and small group instruction.
Post Assessment:
Writing to a prompt, :"Write a story about something you do with your family." Asses student wiring based on picture check chart from the P & P Guide.
Real World Application:
Students will write daily in a variety of places and for a variety of purposes.
Interdisplinary Connections:
Reading: Mentor text.
Writing: Shared writing, interactive writing, charts, signs, letters, and plans.
Content: Science journals, paper traces to social studies lessons, continued number writing practice.
